All children in England between the ages of five and 16 have the right to go to a state school Children normally start primary school when they are coming up to their fifth birthday. Children normally leave primary school at the age of 11 and go to secondary school. Most state schools admit both boys and girls, but some are single-sex schools. |

Your application may not always succeed The Council and the school will try to give your child a place in the school you choose. However, there may be reasons why they cannot accept your child. For example, if the school you choose is popular, there may be too many applications and not enough places. |
